If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease and have some degree of bone loss or gum recession, Ligocki Dental Group may need to incorporate periodontal therapy into your treatment plan. Your periodontal therapy treatment may include laser gum disease treatment or medicated cleaning therapies services to effectively treat the infection. We will work to prevent the infection from returning with routine visits and periodontal maintenance as needed.
Periodontitis, gum disease, is a bacterial infection that damages, and if left untreated, destroys the soft tissue (gums) and jaw bone supporting the teeth and can even cause harm to other parts of the body. Research has shown that infections in the mouth are a gateway for disease-causing bacteria to enter the bloodstream and provoke a number of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, respiratory infection, diabetes, Alzheimer's Disease, stomach ulcers, and low birth weight or premature births.
Gingivitis is a mild form of periodontitis in which only the gum tissue is involved. Without proper care, gingivitis can progress into a more severe form (periodontitis) and affect the bone as well. Gum disease usually starts as a result of poor oral hygiene. Improper or irregular brushing and flossing will allow bacteria to collect below the gum line. Smoking also contributes to a poor oral environment and accelerates the spread of bacteria in the mouth.
This antibiotic treatment helps make your medicated cleaning more effective by improving the overall condition of your gums by killing the bacteria at the root of the problem.
While performed under local anesthesia, a gingivectomy will remove and reshape loose gum tissue with a laser and may be necessary when a patient has severe periodontal disease that has not responded well to other treatments.
Laser therapy for the treatment of periodontal disease is very effective for treating an active infection in the mouth. If you have gum disease and need immediate treatment, this minimally-invasive procedure can treat the infection while preserving healthy gum tissue. Laser gum disease treatment can also promote tissue regeneration. It is an attractive alternative to traditional gum surgery and can treat almost all of the infection in the gums in just one visit.
Even if you had laser gum therapy or any other periodontal therapy, we may need to put you on a periodontal maintenance plan to prevent the infection from coming back. There is no cure for gum disease so periodontal maintenance visits every 3 months may be necessary to keep the infection at bay. We may need to perform medicated cleanings throughout the year and do oral checkups regularly to make sure your gums and teeth are in good health.
A saliva swish test that profiles of oral bacteria that cause periodontal disease, cavity risk, candida risk, HPV risk, Chlamydia trachomatis/Neisseria gonorrhea risk, and inflammatory marker testing.
If you are in the early stages of gum disease and need to remove the plaque and tartar (calculus) that cannot be removed with normal brushing and flossing, we may need to perform a scaling and root planing treatment. This is accomplished with ultrasonic tools that are effective for removing plaque and calculus around the gums and teeth. Medicated cleaning sessions are to ensure the teeth are free of bacteria.
